nosebleedsNosebleeds - and what to do about them

Nosebleeds are a common problem in children and while they can be an indication of a more serious underlying problem, especially if they persist for more than 20 minutes, the majority of nosebleeds are harmless. Nose-picking, dry air from central heating or overblowing their nose can all contribute to nosebleeds.

Teach your child to lean their head forward over a tissue, towel or basin and open their mouth slightly so that they can breathe normally. Avoid leaning back as that may cause vomiting.

Ask them not to sniff or blow as this could start the bleeding again. Apply pressure at the top of your nose but don't pinch the nostrils closed.

Treatment

Zinc, vitamin C and bioflavonoids are very important nutrients for maintaining healthy blood capillaries. So increase your child's fruit and vegetable intake and include foods such as pumpkinseeds, citrus fruits, black currants, berries& cherries, cauliflower, apricots, lentils, corn, buckwheat, rose hip tea, green leafy vegetables, eggs and lean meat.

Try including freh juices to their diet if you are having difficulties getting them to eat fruits & vegetables.

Homoeopathics / Tissue salts / Mineral salts

You can buy Ferrum Phos. as a Schuessler Tissue Salt which is easy to take and does wonders for children with nosebleeds. It can also be used for first or feverish stages of illnesses. Ferrum Phos., Arnica and Aconite are also suitable homoeopathics. Arnica, if the nosebleed is a result of a blow to the area and aconite, if the child is in panic seeing blood.

Mineral salts which your child may be lacking are sodium and potassium phosphates and those can be bought in a chewable tablet.
